About

My first exposure to photography was in my high school graphic arts class where I learned to shoot b/wh film and spent countless hours in the darkroom processing film and making prints. That summer, I bought my first camera, a Pentax Spotmatic, from a local pawnshop and I have been clicking ever since.

I got my BFA in Advertising Design at Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles in the mid-70s, and went on to become an award-winning art director and creative director, creating ad campaigns for major clients for over forty years. That also gave me the opportunity to work with hundreds of top commercial photographers and film directors who I learned a lot from. So when I retired about nine years ago, I decided to rekindle my passion for photography as my hobby. I bought my first full-frame DSLR (a Canon 6D mk i) and a few lenses and began dabbling in street photography, landscape photography, photojournalism and astro-landscape photography before venturing into photographing birds.

It has taken me a little over six years to get to where I am today.

I spend as much time researching and learning about birds, their behaviors, their migration cycles and where to find them to photograph, because the knowledge enables to me anticipate their behaviors and capture more meaningful pictures of birds. I prefer to shoot with a purpose rather than just documenting whatever birds are in front of my camera.

With my art and creative background, my goal is to leverage my knowledge about birds, camera my settings, my camera position and angle to spontaneously design, compose, create and capture seldom seen moments that tell specific stories, that will grab the viewers attention and connect with them emotionally.

I currently spend most of my time photographing birds within 1 1/2 hours of where I live. I have shot along the west coast, between San Diego and Homer, Alaska, I have also shot in New York’s Central Park and Washington D.C. In the future, I hope to be able to photograph more different kinds of birds in farther away places.

Enjoy…
